Atlanta Braves
NEWS: Atlanta signed outfielder Jurickson Profar to a three year contract, reportedly worth $42 million.
IMPACT: Medium
BHQ SPIN: Profar is expected to claim the everyday left field job for Atlanta. Ronald Acuna will reportedly not be ready by Opening Day, but once he is ready to play, Profar’s arrival means one of Jarred Kelenic or Bryan De La Cruz will become the fourth outfielder. Profar is coming off what was probably the best season of his career. He had a .280 BA (.269 xBA), and he had a career high 24 homers along with a 104 PX, the second best of his career. The 31-year old also matched his career high of 10 steals. His 2024 campaign was in sharp contrast to his 2023 season when he had nine homers, one steal, a .255 xBA (.242 BA) and a 78 PX, so some caution is in order as you determine how hard to persue Profar.

Los Angeles Dodgers
NEWS: The Dodgers have reportedly come to terms with free agent RHP Kirby Yates.
IMPACT: High
BHQ SPIN: With some uncertainty about whether or not RHP Michael Kopech will be ready for the start of the season due to right forearm irritation he experienced during the playoffs, Yates adds another high quality arm to the back of the already very deep Dodgers bullpen. Yates (1.17 ERA, 0.83 WHIP, and 24.1% K-BB% with 33 Sv with the Rangers in 2024) joins Kopech and recently signed LHP Tanner Scott to form a formidable closer trio entering the season. Unlike 2024 when he was the clear closer from mid-April on, Yates will have to share save opportunities with Scott and Kopech, as well as with RHP Evan Phillips and RHP Blake Treinen.

Chicago Cubs
NEWS: Chicago signed IF/OF Jon Berti to a one-year, $2 million contract.
IMPACT: Low
BHQ SPIN: Chicago shored up its bench depth with the signing of Berti on a one-year deal. Berti most likely profiles as a super-utility player who could get stray starts, particularly against left-handed pitching. However, he could get an opportunity for regular at-bats to open the season, either at second base (depending on the injury recovery of Nico Hoerner, who underwent flexor tendon surgery on his right forearm in October) or at third base (if Matt Shaw, currently considered the front-runner to win a starting role, begins the year in the minors).

Cleveland Guardians
NEWS: Cleveland signed RHP Paul Sewald to a one-year, $7 million contract.
IMPACT: Low
BHQ SPIN: After an injury-marred season in which he lost his closer role in Arizona, Sewald has latched on with Cleveland on a one-year deal. Given the presence of Emmanuel Clase as Cleveland’s closer, Sewald is highly unlikely to factor into the saves mix at the onset of the season. Sewald may also have a tough road to factoring into the holds mix as well if Hunter Gaddis and Cade Smith can recapture their 2024 form. Still, Sewald could get some opportunities late in games if his performance warrants it, particularly in games in which Cleveland uses Smith for a high-leverage opportunity before the seventh inning.
