Eury Pérez the latest Marlins SP with a setback

Miami Marlins
NEWS: Eury Pérez is experiencing elbow soreness and will undergo imaging and testing over the next several days.
IMPACT: Medium
BHQ SPIN: For now, we’re classifying this news as being medium in import and have only made a small reduction in his projected innings. However, this situation will be worthy of close monitoring and fantasy managers will probably want to exercise caution as they decide whether to roster Perez. It seems like we’ve spent all spring contemplating possibilities for spots in the Miami rotation. As discussed in earlier Playing Time notes, A.J. Puk, Ryan Weathers, Max Meyer and Sixto Sánchez would all seem to be candidates for an increased role with the Marlins. We’ve given each of them a small bump in their projected innings.

Pittsburgh Pirates
NEWS: Pittsburgh agrees to a one-year, $1.25 million minor league contract with RHP Domingo Germán.
IMPACT: Medium
BHQ SPIN: The Pirates are searching for SP depth and their journey led them to German, a 31-year-old who has had his ups and downs throughout his career. Mitch Keller as well as lefties Martín Pérez and Marco Gonzales seem to be secure in the rotation. That leaves two spots up for grabs between Roansy Contreras, Bailey Falter, Jared Jones, Quinn Priester, Luis L. Ortiz, Eric Lauer and Chase Anderson. Now, German gets added to the fray. His 2023 season included a perfect game in June and he finished with 114 K/34 BB and a 4.58 ERA/3.98 xERA in 108.2 IP. It remains to be seen how quickly it would take for German to be ready for the majors. We’re going to project about 70 IP for him for now based on his background, the Pirates’ need for SP and the number of players competing for a spot. To accommodate, we’ve made some minor tweaks to some of the relief corps who don’t appear to be factoring in an Opening Day roster spot.

Los Angeles Dodgers
NEWS: Dodgers RHP Gavin Stone appears to have won the battle for the 5th starter role; RHP Emmet Sheehan will begin the season on the IL.
IMPACT: Medium
BHQ SPIN: Like many top prospects making their major league debuts, Stone struggled (9.00 ERA, 1.90 WHIP, 5% K-BB% in 31 IP) in his debut with the Dodgers last season. But, the #78 prospect in the 2024 HQ100 pitched very well this spring and will get the first chance at the 5th starter spot. We are bumping Stone’s expected workload by about 15 innings to reflect this role. Manager Dave Roberts indicated that RHP Michael Grove, who was competing with Stone for the final rotation spot, might best serve the team as a bridge guy who can go between one and three innings. We project him to pitch about 50 innings this season between a bullpen role or as an occasional opener or spot starter. While Roberts has indicated he doesn’t believe Sheehan’s stay on the IL will be very long, a timetable for his return is still not certain. As a result, we are reducing Sheehan’s playing time.

Toronto Blue Jays
NEWS: Toronto announced that C Danny Jansen has a fractured wrist and will likely miss at least two weeks.
IMPACT: Med
BHQ SPIN: Jansen’s write up in the 2024 Baseball Forecaster (an all-timer) focused on his health grade and fluky or not, yet another injury has felled the catcher. The silver lining is that the Blue Jays believe this injury will only cost him two weeks, though it is probably a safe bet to assume Jansen will open the season on the IL. Jansen was scheduled to share the bulk of the catching duties with Alejandro Kirk, but Brian Serven will now slide into a backup role; both get a slight PT boost at Jansen’s expense until we see how quickly Jansen recovers.
